Pedestrians and cyclists around the Meadows may be pleased to hear that the proposed expansion of the 20mph speed limit zone in the Southside has been, erm, expanded.
The proposal includes a large number of streets close to the Meadows (Melville Drive being noteably absent), and are of great interest to those of us who travel through the park en route to work, university, or other day-to-day activities.
I’m very excited about the proposals — I recently moved a few streets south, and now ride up Causewayside on my route to work — so this applies directly to my main route. I’d like my whole commute to be as pleasant and relaxed as the Meadows section, and with these proposed changes to the streets round about, it’s a step closer. With the feeling (and reality) of safety that a lower speed limit brings, perhaps more people will travel by bike or by foot around the south of the city.
Notices of the proposal have gone up around the area in the past week or so, and a we received a flyer from the Council through our front door a couple of days back, so there’s plenty of offline publicity as well.
If you want to express your support for this proposal (and as a cyclist or pedestrian, it’s in your interest), you can write to:
The Director of City Development, (Transport), Waverly Court, 4 East Market Street, Edinburgh EH1 1ZL. The deadline is 3rd June 2011.
