The People’s Postcode Lottery has just awarded Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust funding to make some landscape improvements at Fiveways Junction – the hub of North Edinburgh’s paths.
The landscaping project aims to help turn Fiveways into somewhere a bit more special with some circular stone walling, new planting, relaying the grass verges and creating some paths around the site. This will hopefully transform the area into a place to stop by creating dedicated spaces away from the main tarmac paths and to make the site much more visually attractive.
We plan to involve some artists from the nearby Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop in contributing some stone carvings for the site, and we’re also hoping to put in a couple of cycle hoops on the lamp posts too so that there is somewhere to lock a bike when stopping there and wanting to sit or walk around.
No designs have been finalised – please let us know what you think. We will keep you updated of progress.
This is not the first time that the People’s Postcode Lottery have supported Edinburgh’s paths – through a Dream Fund award in 2011 they funded the development of the Innertube map, this website and a programme of improvements and events along the paths over 18 months – read more about their involvement here. More recently, the Dream Fund has given £232,000 to a Glasgow cycling project run by a partnership of the Glasgow Bike Station, Cycling Scotland, the CTC and Play Scotland to run an ambitious programme of children’s cycling activities.
