The annual count of cyclists passing Fiveways Junction between 7.30 and 9.15am this morning showed an astounding 26% increase in cycle traffic compared to the same Tuesday in 2010, and on a day with remarkably similar weather.
The increase mirrored increases seen elsewhere - on Causewayside, there was a 14% increase.
But on North Bridge, there was a 1% drop - statistically insignificant, and probably due to many cyclists seeking alternative routes because Princes Street is closed, and also because of extra congestion caused by cars being diverted from the Mound for North-South journeys.
We don't know how many of these new extra cyclists were carrying Innertube maps in their pockets, but our feedback has been that many people have discovered new, easier and quicker routes to work as a result!
This was the scene at one of our events at Fiveways Junction back in the summer.
