One month ago something exciting opened at the end of the red line, it’s the new café in Newhaven, the Haven.
I enjoyed my visit so much I negotiated an Innertube map deal - bring your Innertube map to the café you get a 99p mug of tea.
I recommend the scone with clotted cream and homemade jam, it's the best scone I’ve had in Edinburgh (and I’ve eaten a lot of scones). It's quite big though - good to share with a friend. They also do an all-day breakfast, soup and cakes: it's good value and they have a take-away menu too.
I was joined by fellow coffee shop frequenter 'the Editor', you can read her review of the Haven Cafe on The Edinburgh Reporter. Despite what she suggests about the speed of my scone consupmtion, I savoured that scone and devoured it slowly, taking the last of it home in a paper bag.
Here’s what café owner Natalie said:
“The Innertube map is a brilliant project, I hadn’t realised we had such a great network of cycle paths on our doorstep and I hope to welcome cyclists to the café for a cup of tea and a slice of cake”. (But you don't have to be a cyclist to enjoy their cakes, or the discount - as long as you have the map!).
To get to the Haven Café head north on the red and come off on the second to last stop (just after the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop). Come down Hawthornvale to the main road and the café is on the corner. It’s less than five minutes' cycle from Fiveways Junction. There are railings opposite the Haven Café to lock your bike up; take care and use the cycle crossing to cross the busy main road.
The café also plays excellent music and has free WI-FI. You can follow the Haven Café on twitter or on facebook.
