Longmore House, Historic Scotland’s Edinburgh office, has recently been designated as a Cycle Friendly Employer by Cycling Scotland, Scotland’s cycling charity.
Longmore House boasts an impressive 10% of its 300 staff cycling to work on a regular basis, and they have good reason to. With secure cycle parking, showering and changing facilities, a salary sacrifice bicycle purchase scheme, a business mileage rate for work journeys made by bike, bike breakfasts, tools available for minor bike repairs, and maps available to staff, an active bicycle users groups, to name but a few resources, staff are well supported and encouraged to cycle to work. This cycle provision isn’t just for staff – cycle parking is even provided at the front of the building for any guests visiting Longmore House.
Cycling Scotland’s Cycle Friendly Employer Award is run in conjunction with the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives. The aim of the award is to give employers the incentive to achieve a nationally recognised award for promoting cycling in the workplace which will result in benefits for employers and staff alike. The award also provides best practice guidance in relation to cycle commuting and can be used as a practical tool to implement cycle measures as part of a sustainable travel plan.
The award recognises the work that has taken place to encourage Historic Scotland’s staff to make active travel choices. Wendy Graham, Cycle Friendly Employer Officer said “cycling is very much part of the ethos at Longmore House, and we are proud to formally recognise the effort that has gone in to cycle promotion there. This hard work is firmly reflected in the number of regular cyclists that commute to Historic Scotland by bike”.
